The "IDOC," which stands for Illinois Department of Corrections, is a state government agency responsible for operating the adult prison system in Illinois, managing the incarceration of felons sentenced by the courts to state prisons, and overseeing parole services; its primary focus is to operate secure correctional facilities, provide quality medical and mental health care to individuals in custody, and work towards rehabilitation to reduce recidivism rates, all while prioritizing staff training and a safe environment for both staff and inmate

Responsibilities:

  • Enforcing rules: Correctional officers enforce rules and regulations, and respond to disturbances and emergencies. 
  • Supervising inmates: Correctional officers supervise inmates' activities, work assignments, and meals. They also perform headcounts and escort inmates to various locations. 
  • Searching for contraband: Correctional officers search for weapons, drugs, and other unauthorized items in cells, showers, and recreation areas. 
  • Resolving conflicts: Correctional officers settle disputes between inmates and end violent confrontations. 
  • Inspecting facilities: Correctional officers inspect facilities to ensure they meet security and safety standards. 
  • Reporting: Correctional officers report on inmate conduct and identify unusual behavior. 
  • Managing facility operations: Correctional officers manage food service, sanitation, and maintenance. 
  • Responding to emergencies: Correctional officers respond quickly to emergencies and disturbances. 
  • Managing access: Correctional officers manage facility access to ensure only authorized personnel and visitors enter or exit

 

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate
  • U.S. citizen or authorized alien with proof of a permanent resident card
  • Speak, read, and write English
